Vicarious Forgiveness
This may be more of a request for pastoral-type guidance than simple theology, and if that strains the purpose of the message board than I apologize in advance. This perhaps falls under the general category of forgiveness. But it isn't "direct" forgiveness. It has to do with the attitude one should ...

Re: Hell book complete
Dag nabbit -- in my excitement I posted this message in the wrong discussion thread. Not sure if there's a way to have that incorrectly placed comment removed from the "Debating an Atheist" page. "Good news -- Amazon has sent me a notice that the book has been shipped. At long last, the Hell book ge...

Re: Hell book complete
I guess Steve makes a fair point that it is probably at least theoretically possible that reading the book could influence JR's assessment of its contents.

Re: "Sinai"
Thanks for the insights on this stuff, fellas. Steve, it is particularly inspiring that you are able to maintain a harmonious marriage when the two of you are divided over such a fundamental issue of doctrine.

"Sinai"
Do you ever get some trivial little question in your mind that nags at you even though there is no importance to it whatsoever? I think this keeps coming up in my mind because I just finished Steve's lectures on the Pentateuch (starting Joshua now . . . .). Really outstanding lectures, by the way. B...

Re: Hell book complete
Drat -- Amazon just notified me that delivery of my copies are delayed until November. Oh, well. Looking forward to reading it whenever the release does occur.

Re: Inter-generational Visiting of Rewards/Punishments
Thanks, Robby. That does help me to understand your view better. I appreciate your taking the time to elaborate, and I will certainly give it some thought.

Re: Inter-generational Visiting of Rewards/Punishments
Thanks, Robby. It seems to me that if this is your reading, it requires much more than an allegorization of the numbers 3 and 4, though. It seems to require abandonment of most of the literal meaning of the text of the passages, since you don't read the passage as indicating a visitation of the sins...

Re: Inter-generational Visiting of Rewards/Punishments
Thanks, Robby, but even accepting your interpretation of the text, your reading would make the problem far more problematic, not less. Now instead of having potential conflicts for four generations following the commission of the sin, you have a far longer chain of fathers and sons subject to being ...

Re: Inter-generational Visiting of Rewards/Punishments
Thanks, Matt. It occurs to me that one other possibility is that if you do look at it more in a mechanical way, they could partially or wholly offset each other. If you imagine a single quantitative measure for purposes of illustration, if the cross-generational effect of 1's misconduct is a -3, and...
