Current thinking is that the first life forms would have been free living genes made of RNA or something similar to it.
I have a video explaining why that idea is most probable given our current understanding of life and chemistry right here: https://youtu.be/K1xnYFCZ9Yg

How did multi-celled animals evolve?
At the debate several years back, Steve asked how multi-celled organisms could have evolved. I gave a quick answer there on the spot but recently got around to doing a proper animation on the subject. Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUfNEHl44hc In the video description on YouTube you can...

Re: What exactly is science?
Linking facts together into an explanation (theory building) is a huge part of science. Think of a puzzle for analogy. Each piece is a fact. If you don't know what the big picture is ahead of time, you can only figure it out by attempting to fit the puzzle pieces together. Once a picture starts to f...

What exactly is science?
A few years back when I debated with Steve I spent some time explaining what science is and what it is not. Since that time, I've honed in my thinking a bit more on the philosophy of science and I'm getting ready to do a series of animations on the topic. Before I do though, I'd love your feedback o...

Re: Why Are We Here?
That could be hurtful. What if the things you like would result in greater harm to people? But even supposing you like only the things that benefit people, what if you are unable to change the harmful things that people do to one another? If I were to start harming people, I would hope that would s...

How Does Cooperation Evolve?
At first glance it seems that natural selection should always promote selfishness, yet all throughout biology (while there is an awful lot of selfishness), we also find incredible examples of cooperation. Genes work together to create cells, cells work together to create multi-celled organisms, bees...

Re: Why Are We Here?
As a non-believer, maybe my two cents will count a bit here. My assumption is that I'm truly mortal - my mind is an emergent property of my brain and it did not exist before my brain developed. Likewise, my mind will be destroyed with my brain when I die. This is unfortunate and pretty disturbing to...

I'm not saying to abandon faith in a Creator. All I'm saying is that it seems unwise to me to point to a specific phenomena and say "that right there, because science doesn't currently explain it, is something that God personally did". This seems to me like a bad activity for the fact that once a na...

Psimmond, So where did the chemicals come from and the energy that acted upon them? If you exclude a supernatural creator, as many scientists do, this seems like it would be impossible to answer or even attempt to answer. The chemicals came from atoms interacting to form molecules. According to our ...

Re: How do new genes evolve?
That's not a very fair explanation they give of the primordial soup hypothesis. Life origins chemistry is an active field of research. We're finding lots of fascinating ways in which polymers could have evolved before the formation of the first cells. Jeremy England’s stuff is still in it's infant s...
