Re: Does belief save?

Does belief save?

Romans 10:9 seems to indicate "no." For fairness to the topic, here are two of the more literal translations from two different original sources: ESV: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. NKJV: 9 that if yo...

Re: Was God Love?

It has been argued here that Jesus died on the cross to enable us to be better persons, never perfect, but better. I deny this view. I believe that Jesus suffered and died the death we all deserve , not just because we are all sinners; we are actually criminal lawbreakers of God's laws. it has been...

Re: Disputed New Testament Texts

Two takeaways for me: 1) the NT writings were not divinely inspired. This is not emphasized enough in the church. In fact, all or nearly all churches I've been to say they were "the word of God." But they were simply reliable accounts. Some witnessed the events directly. Some compiled the events thr...

Re:

The trinity doctrine is not threatened in any way by statements of distinction between Jesus and His Father. In fact, it is written into every formulation of the doctrine (I do not endorse any particular formulation) that this is exactly what we would expect the Bible to say. I’m disappointed that ...

Re: Jesus is God

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus...(1Timothy 2:5 ESV) 1 Corinthians 8:6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist...

"The doctrine of the Trinity" is found nowhere in the New Testament.
It appears that Tertullian may have been the first to teach it (in the 3rd century).
Interesting. If true, it seems the burden of proof is assuredly on the Trinity advocates to prove their side.

Re: Soteriology

I believe Jesus' death and resurrection had far greater effect, namely He suffered and died for the sins of all who ever lived. If so, how does that benefit the more than 90% of all people who are not Christians? But it is easy to see how one might take on the penalty (think debt) of another. Hmmm....

Re: Sacrificial System (and Atonement)

I ran across this quote from NT Wright the other day - thought it would provoke some good discussion: The more I’ve puzzled away about the meaning of sacrifice in the first century and so forth, and the more I’ve read from both Christian and Jewish writers on this subject, the more it really does s...

Re: What happens when you commit suicide

As a universal reconciliationist I believe the Lord gets what he wants eventually, which is to have you in His loving arms. If you aren’t saved you will go to hell, and it becomes a matter of how long. I wouldn’t want to find out though. Since God himself could take you at any time, and he has not d...
