Re: Purpose of the church today - Preterism
Most full preterists see the current era as a perpetual state. I would agree with that but add that it's also what's known as the thousand year reign of the saints as well. Full preterists make a connection between the typological imagery of Ezekiel 47 and Isaiah 65-66, and the symbolism of Revelati...

Do you think it's awkward that the Gog and Magog war happens twice (that the Ezekiel one is different than the Revelation one)?

Re: "Beheaded" in Rev 20:4 a reference to Islam?
I think the problem that the Historicists would have is that they moved on to events in Europe such as the French Revolution for the Bowl judgements, which would be the last judgments in the sequence. This would eclipse the Islamic narrative.

Re: Interesting discussion on Romans (pointless to teach???)
I'm sympathetic to your friend's frustration. Mine starts in trying to point out that chapter 1 is a description of the history of Israel, who were the only people who'd ever known God and then traded that knowledge for idols. And, I think there is something to his point of not anchoring your theolo...

Re:
As much fun as it might be to debate the rabbit trails leading from it, I'd like to focus back on your original claim:
"If the literal sense makes sense, then it makes no sense to take it in any other sense."
What objective standard is used to determine what makes "literal sense"?

I'd connect it with Daniel 7:19 and following, and Revelation 20:4. In my opinion, they are directly connected with the era of the Roman Empire in the age of the Apostles.

Re: Re:
Yes. Do you? Sure. I'd start with the idea that any phrase with absolutes such as "and never shall be", or "ever has been", should be examined for idiomatic exaggeration. It would make sense theologically that when we say that the God of the Bible is the "most high God" that this is an absolute sta...

Re: Re:
As one old Mennonite man declared, "If the literal sense makes sense, then it makes no sense to take it in any other sense." That approach seems like circular reasoning to me. You are assuming that something makes sense as a literal statement and then using this fact to take it literally. Don't you...

Re: Re:
Of course many or most of us historic pre-millenialists (as well as dispensationalists) understand Jesus' words to be literally true, believing it to refer to the future tribulation period that is predicted to come just prior to the second coming of Christ, and the establishment of his millenial re...

Re: Rev 17:8 - The beast who is not
Here's another generic preterist argument for Nero as the Beast:
