Re: My Preterist Journey (so far + video)

Thanks, Douglas! I actually also have Troels Engberg-Pedersen's earlier book, "Paul and the Stoics" (c. 2000, 448 pp. including footnotes) -- which I got used at a really good price. I decided to read "The Material Spirit" first because it seemed more directly related to eschatology. After finishing...

Re: My Preterist Journey (so far + video)

Addendum: The book link provides synopses of the chapters. Also, the book isn't (necessarily) directly related to preterism though what I've read so far seems to be consistent with it. It would be of interest to anyone who's interested in 'the resurrection body'.

Re: My Preterist Journey (so far + video)

Greetings! (several months later, providing dwilkins' full post from page one for context -- reply at bottom) . . . . I think the key to the resurrection piece is that starting immediately in post-scripture early Christian writings you have the work being done by people trained in Greek philosophy. ...

Re: Self-Identifying as Sinner

I used to have a stack of books 3 feet high with virtually every theory about problem drinking, alcoholism as a disease, excessive drinking as a sin -- you name it, I've read about it. (Can't remember if I threw the books out or gave them away). Anyways, thanks Paidion! :)

Re: Self-Identifying as Sinner

Paidion, Thanks for your reply. I thought I made it clear that I, myself, came to see alcoholism as a behavior (not a disease). When I was in AA, also working in Alcohol Rehab in the Navy, I became aware of many models of alcohol abuse. Even AA recognizes that some are problem drinkers and may or ma...

Re: Self-Identifying as Sinner

Somewhat late in my reply but . . . . Rick, have you ever come across this book? Heavy Drinking: The Myth of Alcoholism as a Disease No, I hadn't heard of the book or author. I've seen several similar books thru the years. One was "Moderation Management". I had read it back when I was in AA going th...

Re: Self-Identifying as Sinner

P.S. (not exactly on-topic) but . . . . My first AA sponsor, the late, great David Rudolph, of Lake Forest, IL (RIP, whose neighbor was "Mr. T", LOL); well, David had an "AA" belt buckle. So I says, "How long do I have to be sober before I get one of those?" "Frequent Flyer, American Airlines, 100,0...

Re: Self-Identifying as Sinner

Thanks, Don. If my testimony can be of help to anyone . . . . Anyone at all. Re: 'medical model'. When AA was founded, several doctors were consulted. Back then (in the 30s), AA, following medical advice, came to see alcoholism as an allergy/disease. Since then (and currently) it is technically 'Alc...

Re: Self-Identifying as Sinner

IMPORTANT ADDENDUM (caps for emphasis) While attending the Christian meetings I was given a "Life Recovery Bible" (NLT) . As seen in the link, it's 12 Steps based, following the medical model. The first thing I did when I got my copy was see what the commentary would be on 1 Cor 6:9-11. IT WAS BLANK...

Re: Self-Identifying as Sinner

Greetings, Friends (of whom I see some of you on Facebook from time to time), If I did a Search, I'm sure I could find some of my old posts on this topic & link to it. But I'm off work tonite (3rd shift rest area caretaker, i.e., custodian/janitor). Which, when I'm off work I'm always in a good mood...
