Re: διαβολος (fallen angel?)

Darin, You wrote: it caused me to have at least some doubts on my view of Satan as a created tempter, not a fallen angel. Where would we find biblical evidence of the origin of the devil? It seems the biblical focus is on his activity/position/character and little else. I have considered him as an a...

Re: διαβολος (fallen angel?)

For what its worth the understanding in Kittel seems to be "adversary", Volume II, p. 71-81.

Re: God and the Word of God

That would be a perfectly reasonable take on the passage if other scripture plainly taught such a thing, though there are many other takes on the passage.
But it appears to be just as plainly taught in Col. 1:15-16. And it might be asked what scriptures plainly contradict his understanding?

God and the Word of God

An excerpt from the Anchor Bible Dictionary, Volume III, p. 923, by Johannine scholar Robert Kysar: God and the Word of God Among the images employed to express the identity of Jesus are two which make the bold assertion that Jesus is God. The first of these is the use of the title, logos (Word) for...

Re: Did Jesus have faith?

If Jesus truly "emptied himself" in the incarnation He would certainly have needed faith. And if He had no need of faith, how would He be an example to us?

Re: 1 Thes 3:17

Hi Darin,

Isn't your quote from 1 Thess. 3:13, similar to 5:23?

Thanks, Homer

Christology & the Early Church Fathers

There hasn't been a lot of discussion here concerning what the earliest Christians (ante-Nicene) believed about the person of Jesus. I'm interested in hearing any quotes that support the various ideas that have been espoused here on the subject. I recently read in Ignatius of Antioch's letter to the...

Re: Functional Kenosis

Dizerner,

As far as I can see we are in agreement, I think. Jesus came from being the Word to being the Son which He will forever be.

Thanks, Homer

Re: The Trinity: What Must Be Believed

Darin,

No insult meant, it just seemed tiresome to me; perhaps my 83 years has something to do it.
From Websters:

screed

1. a long speech or piece of writing, typically one regarded as tedious:
Not used to reading long posts., seemed tedious to me.

Re: The Trinity: What Must Be Believed

Darin, I read most of what you posted by Emlyn (a unitarian). What I did not see was any discussion of the kenosis (Philippians 2:7) and how it might affect our understanding. What did the Christ give up and when; when did He have and not have what was given up? If he did not pre-exist it is difficu...
