Re: Hello there, I'm an atheist

But you are right. A classic atheist believes in no God or gods. The word "agnostic" literally means "not knowing." I think word should apply to those who hold no firm position on the existence or not existence of God or gods. They don't have any belief concerning the matter, although they might le...

Re: Hello there, I'm an atheist

Hey Padion, Your right that is an easy point of confusion. I think it comes from the shift in perspective. Correct me if I'm wrong but for you there is only one possible god. So the idea believe exists or believe does not exist seems like a true dichotomy. For me the dichotomy is believe does exist ...

Re: "Playing God" New life created from chemicals with a mac

I agree I'd like to see the cellular structures recreated. That would put abiogenesis into a much better place for being well grounded science and not just a compelling hypothesis. This is kind of like Frankenstine's monster though with better results. A self replicating cell is way more impressive ...

Re: Hello there, I'm an atheist

Homer, I'm having a hard time believing you are reading the things I post. Your legal positivism is just moral relativism with a different name. I've repeated myself, ad nausium it seems, on this topic. What is it about my position that is indistinguishable to you from relativism? Do you plan to ans...

Re: The Plausibility of Atheism

I use It for god's pronoun when soeaking theoretically. I usually use he for the bible god as that is consistant with the various Abrahamic mythologies. If asked why though I'd identify it as a likley result of partriarchial western culture and the presumption of male as 'default'. Jason, I want to ...

Re: Hello there, I'm an atheist

Paidion wrote: Is an action morally right because God commands it? It might not have anything to do with morality, it might be a positive command which makes it right regardless of morality, as is the case with many of our laws. Isn't that just a restatement of the first, something is right because...

Re: Hello there, I'm an atheist

Thanks Padion, saved me quite a lot of trouble digging up the punishment is useless citations. Homer, I don't know if you can see it but your thanking my christian upbringing for my ethical sense is both arrogant and insulting. Please don't hang your biases on me. You have no idea how many unethical...

Re: Hello there, I'm an atheist

Brenden, My apologies for the spelling error. I'm using my phone and a small screen. You guessed my word correctly. When I say viable I am using the word in the specific context of pregnancy where a fetus is nonviable unless it can survive without the direct assistance of the mother's body. In the a...

Re: The Plausibility of Atheism

Jason, From my experience you are in good company. Even practicioners of the "same" branch of religion rarely agree on what being such a thing entails and how true they consider the verious beliefs. It was that very problem that seems to have led to the creeds and explains why so much of religious s...
