Re: Why Hasn’t Jesus Returned Yet?

Hi mattrose, I think Wright's view is a stretch exegetically because in the Synoptics, the phrase "all these things" which were to take part in their generation included the parousia, not just the judgment on Jerusalem. So the expectation was that Jesus would return while some of them were still liv...

Re: Why Hasn’t Jesus Returned Yet?

mattrose, I think Wright's explanation is very strained at points and too easily cries "metaphorical" when passages don't align with his view. The Jews expected the coming of an earthly kingdom, and I see nothing in the Synoptics to suggest Jesus expected the soon-coming kingdom to be anything diffe...

Re: Why Hasn’t Jesus Returned Yet?

mattrose, that sounds like N.T. Wright's position. Is your view about the same as his, or is your view more postmillennial? And do you think there's any way to measure the quality and quantity, or are we just left to shoot for an ambiguous goal?

Why Hasn’t Jesus Returned Yet?

I've been spending a lot of time studying different eschatological views, and I wrote this post that I hope some might finding interesting and perhaps helpful: http://www.simmondses.com/2017/10/21/why-hasnt-jesus-returned-yet/ . At the end of the post is a link to seven proposals to explain the dela...

Re: Charlottesville, VA Turmoil

darinhouston, I'm afraid I just don't understand your comment. We were already a nation and a republic. It's likely slavery would have died out eventually without a war, but there's no way to know how long it would have taken. The South made it clear they wanted to secede because they felt alienated...

Re: Charlottesville, VA Turmoil

Perry, I see nothing in that article about why southern states wanted to secede. They said themselves they wanted to maintain their "peculiar institution," i.e. slavery. Did Lincoln somewhere say the southern states were lying about this? If the southern states were not trying to secede over the iss...

Re: Charlottesville, VA Turmoil

I don't think the slippery slope argument should fluster us. If they advocated for the oppression of others, we refuse to publicly honor them. Washington had slaves but no one associates his name with slavery. Yes, there will be some cases that are in the gray area and deserve debate, and we cannot ...

Re: Charlottesville, VA Turmoil

TK, good points. I know there were good and bad people on both sides, but it shouldn't be hard for us in 2017 to say the southern cause was immoral and we cannot publicly honor those who fought for the right to own other people. It was a part of our history and belongs in our textbooks and museums b...
