Re: The Raising of Lazarus
But Witherington said he has found at least 2 ancient sources that speculate that Lazarus may be the author. If you can ask him anything, I'd really like to know what these sources are. I'm guessing one of them was so-called 'Secret Mark', a gospel now widely considered to be a mid-twentieth centur...

Re: The Raising of Lazarus
Dr. Witherington also believes that all the NT Writings identified with the name John are connected. He believes they all are products of an early Christian community which included Lazarus (whom he believes was the 'beloved disciple') and John of Patmos. He believes Lazarus is the main author of t...

Re: The Raising of Lazarus
I am in a class with Ben Witherington this week and he just made his pitch for the Lazarus as the author He made a very strong case. But I am going to have to think about it more. Any questions you want me to ask him? Lazarus fails on a number of points: firstly, church history says it was 'John'. ...

Re: The Raising of Lazarus
Hi Dean, I think Witherington’s found his theory necessary because he thinks Lazarus’ wrote it (which is not your view). The following challenge was presented to Witheringtion: In Chapter 12, there is a mention of a meal at the house of Lazarus. In Chapter 13, the Beloved Disciple is said to reclin...

Re: The Raising of Lazarus
Thanks for clearing that up for me. Allyn gave what I thought was a better response than Witherington: A misperception about Jesus’ last Passover has tended to give credence to the idea that John was the author of this Gospel. John 21:20 tells us, “the disciple whom Jesus loved” was the one who “lea...

Re: The Raising of Lazarus
You folks might find this article pertinent. There is a detailed summary of the internal and external evidence for the authorship of the Gospel of John: Gospel of John In John 19:25-27, the author identifies "the disciple whom he [Jesus] loved" as the one whose testimony is true and worthy of belie...

Re: The Raising of Lazarus
Steve, am I missing something here? I can't see how matters either way whether it was all the same meal or not (and I take it to be the same meal as the Last Supper mentioned everywhere else). How does this effect who wrote John?

Yes, I think it's very significant.Paidion wrote: Is it that significant that the Muratorian canon speaks of "the disciple John" and immediately afterward speaks of "Andrew one of the apostles"?

I know you didn't get a reply to that question, but I hope you provide further evidence because I know I'd love to hear it.Allyn wrote: However there is more evidence to consider, but I will let you reply first.
