I'm glad to hear Gregg's analysis of Zephaniah. I was in a bible study group when we came across chapter 1 and everyone was convinced this was a global destruction. I was saying this should only refer to land around Judah since Zeph 1:4 sets the context to be Judah's discipline. I was tending to think this was the later destruction of Jerusalem but now it seems to be the time of Babylon but possibly also a type of the later destruction.

That was sneaky. You also modified the link in the original thread. That actually is the best option. I just went to the video link to get the lecture.

The problem that Steve helps reveal is that translations of the Hebrew word (אֲדָמָה) can either be earth or land (and a few others). Most modern translations say "earth," which combine with the general dramatic wording to endorse the global concept. However, the context is around the judgment of Judah (1:4). The similar problem occurs with the word that may be translated as people, man, mankind. So Zeph 1:3 should be seen as sweeping away people and beasts ... of cutting off people from the face of the land. This language more appropriately reflects a localized event.

It is interesting that Steve teaches this from the NKJV, which is better than most other modern translations.
